Bridwell continued to write about Clifford, compiling stories such as Clifford Takes a Trip (1966), Clifford’s Good Deeds (1975), Clifford and the Grouchy Neighbors (1985), Clifford the Firehouse Dog (1994), Clifford and the Halloween Parade (1999), and Clifford Goes to Dog School (2002). One editor he visited suggested that he write and illustrate his own book, so he produced Clifford the Big Red Dog, which was published in 1963. In the early 1960s Bridwell tried to obtain work as a children’s illustrator. Bridwell studied at the John Herron Art Institute (now the Herron School of Art and Design at Indiana University) in Indianapolis before attending Cooper Union in New York, New York. Norman Ray Bridwell was born on February 15, 1928, in Kokomo, Indiana. During Bridwell’s long career, he wrote and illustrated dozens of Clifford books geared toward preschoolers and beginning readers. Clifford is a 25-foot- (8-meter-) tall, lovable red dog that is owned by a young girl named Emily Elizabeth. American children’s author and illustrator Norman Bridwell was best known for creating the character of Clifford.
